Summary

Brandy, Kipp, and Oglesby descended from the towers to check the surroundings, then regrouped and ascended to a door where they had previously heard voices. Listening, they overheard, what sounded like, goblins complaining about poor food and mundane issues. Impatient, Brandy signaled Kipp, who opened the door, surprising the bugbears inside.

Kipp led the charge, landing a critical hit on a bugbear killing it with a throat slash. Brandy and Audra attacked but missed their targets. The bugbears, including a sergeant, drew weapons and retaliated, one flipping a table to clear space. Pyreece joined the melee striking a bugbear. Audra hit another. Oglesby switched to his bow, while Elenor refrained from casting a fireball due to close quarters.

A human voice shouted from an adjacent room, revealing a man in armor, an orc, and two bugbears, who withdrew through a back door as the area became over crowded. The party pressed their advantage, with Brandy, Kipp, Pyreece, and Audra eliminating more bugbears. Oglesby and Elenor fired into the crowd, landing hits. The bugbear sergeant fell, collapsing in filth.

Chasing the human and others, the party moved through the next room and into the following room. In there, they found towo exits with one door ajar. Beyond that door were crates, tables, and stairs. As Kipp and Brandy began ascending, they heard bugbears entering behind them, prompting a shout and engagement. The human reached the door first, but Kipp and Brandy engaged him, while Audra, Pyreece, Elenor, and Oglesby rained arrows and sling stones on them. The human withdrew, and the party charged into that room. Kipp focused on the human, and the others fought the orc (Dudley) and two bugbears. Sergeant Rock fell, followed by the bugbears, with Dudley going down last.

The party checked two latrine rooms at either end, noting the foul smell but finding no enemies. Pyreece healed significant damage, particularly for Oglesby and Audra. After clearing the parapet, they searched the bodies, finding a longbow, chain mail, platemail, two longswords, a sapphire, and 45 gold pieces on both Dudley and Sergeant Rock. Oglesby found rosters and delivery timelines signed by Markessa, a Slavelord, but no other recognizable names.

Audra ascended to a room where a wolf pup nipped at her playfully. Below, they found crates with supplies, bandages, and a key, which Oglesby took. They proceeded through a western door to another parapet, where Brandy scouted north, spotting bloodstains and two bugbears. At midnight, aware of the bugbears’ infravision, Brandy crawled on all fours, mimicking their snuffling sounds, with Kipp following, trying to appear as a bugbear. Unnoticed, Brandy sprang up, dealing 13 points and a killing blow to one bugbear. Kipp’s attack decapitated the other after their shout of alarm. More bugbears approached.

Brandy and Kipp led the renewed battle, supported by Elenor’s and Pyreece’s slings and Oglesby’s and Audra’s arrows. The bugbears fell quickly, leaving many corpses on the parapet. Oglesby climbed a 10-foot wall, observing a slanted roof with no openings. The party descended to a courtyard with a fountain, trees, and ivy-covered walkways. Brandy and Kipp moved towards the building, scouting opposite sides, when nets were thrown, entangling Brandy. Kipp dodged a net, moved to shield Brandy and fired at an archer but missing. Brandy cut one net strand with her short sword, and Audra cut another. More bugbears appeared on ledges above.

Kipp climbed onto the balcony, and Audra helped Brandy up. Elenor’s fireball engulfed the balcony on the front of the building, burning several bugbears and setting the wooden interior ablaze. Two bugbears firing from arrow slits withdrew as the fire grew. Over several rounds, the remaining bugbears outside were killed, and screams from within the structure quieted.

The courtyard was secured, but the fire’s light, visible for miles in the early morning, obscured their infravision and posed a risk of attracting attention. Having defeated numerous bugbears and gathered intelligence, the party noted that Markessa and the other Slavelords remained at large, and their mission in the stockade continued.

Detail

Brandy, Kipp, and Oglesby, positioned in the towers, descended, checking the surroundings. They regrouped and proceed upstairs in the tower to a door they had previously heard voices behind. Listening at the door, they overheard what sounded like goblins complaining about poor food quality and mundane matters. Brandy, impatient, signaled to Kipp, who threw open the door, catching the occupants off guard.

The room contained several bugbears, who turned in surprise as the party charged in. Kipp led the assault, striking a bugbear with a critical hit, dealing 27 points of damage and killing it instantly with a lethal slash across its throat. Brandy and Audra followed, Brandy attacking one bugbear and missing while Audra attacked another bugbear, missing as well. The party’s sudden onslaught shifted the bugbears’ demeanor, prompting them to draw weapons and counterattack.

The fight escalated as the bugbears, including a bugbear sergeant, retaliated. One of the bugbear's flipped a table out of the way, clearing space for combat. Pyreece moved in, striking a bugbear for 7 points, while Audra dealt 13 points to another. Oglesby positioned himself strategically, switching to his bow, and Elenor assessed the situation, opting not to cast a fireball due to the close quarters.

As the battle continued, a human voice shouted from an adjacent room, and a man in bugbear armor, clearly not a bugbear. The area around the door was now crowded with bugbears so the man, an orc, and two more bugbears from that room withdrew through a back door. The party maintained their momentum, with Brandy, Kipp, Pyreece, and Audra landing solid hits, eliminating more bugbears. Oglesby and Elenor fired into the crowd of bugbears, with both landing hits. The bugbear sergeant finally fell, collapsing in a heap of filth.

The group pressed forward, chasing after the human and others. They moved through the next room and into the room beyond. Exploring that room they found another door ajar. Beyond it were crates, cables, and stairs leading upward. Kipp and Brandy started to ascend the stairs when the enemy was spotted entering the room behind them. The bugbears raised a shout, and the party turned to engage.

The human reached the door first as Kipp and Brandy met him there and engaged. Audra and Pyreece took up range positions and, along with Elenor and Oglesby, rained arrows and sling stones into him and those behind him. The human took a pummeling and finally had to withdraw from the door. Everyone charged into the next room. Kipp stuck to the human while the rest moved in and fought the orc, Dudley, and the other two bugbears. The badly beaten Seargent Rock fell, followed by the two bugbears. Dudley went down last.

There were two more rooms on either end of this stretch of rooms. The last rooms on either end were the latrines. The smells coming from there were pretty bad but there were no more enemy. Pyreece healed a bunch of the damage taken during the battle, especially with Oglesby and Audra.

After clearing the parapet, the group searched the bodies, finding a longbow, chain mail, platemail, two longswords, a sapphire, and 45 gold pieces on the orc named Dudley and Sergeant Rock. Oglesby examined papers in the room, discovering rosters and delivery timelines signed by Markessa, a known Slavelord. There were no other names that they recognized.

Moving on, the Audra ascended the stairs to the room above, where a wolf pup playfully nipped at her. In the rooms below, they found crates with supplies, bandages, and a key hanging on the wall, which Og took. Exploring further, they found a door to the west and ascended to another parapet, where Brandy scouted north, spotting bloodstains and two bugbears looking over the wall.

At midnight, Brandy, aware of the bugbears’ infravision, crawled on all fours, mimicking their snuffling sounds to approach stealthily. Kipp followed, attempting to appear to be a bugbear following her. The bugbears, distracted, failed to notice until Brandy sprang up, striking one for 13 points of damage, followed by a second hit that killed it. They had gotten off a shout of alarm before Kipp’s attack decapitated the other, and the party quickly regrouped as more bugbears approached.

The battle resumed with Brandy and Kipp leading the charge, supported by Elenor’s and Pyreece's slings along with Og's and Audra's arrows. The bugbears, caught in the open, fell rapidly, with the party’s coordinated attacks leaving many bugbear corpses strewn across the parapet. Oglesby climbed the 10-foot interior wall, observing a slanted roof with no openings. Deciding to proceed, the party descended to the courtyard, a lush area with a stone fountain, trees, and ivy-covered walkways.

Brandy and Kipp split up, each taking a side to scout. As they advanced, nets were thrown from above, entangling Brandy. Kipp dodged a similar trap and positioned himself to shield her, firing at an archer but missing. Brandy began cutting the net, severing one strand with her short sword. Audra joined her cutting another strand. More bugbears poured out onto the ledges above. Elenor cast a fireball, engulfing the balcony in flames and seriously burning several bugbears. Though the structures walls were stone, there was a lot of wood within and it burned very well.

Kipp had already climbed up onto the balcony and Audra assisted Brandy getting up there as well. There had been two bugbears firing from arrow slits but as the fire grew, they were forced to withdraw. Over the course of a few more rounds, the bugbears outside were killed. There had been screams and shouts from within the structure but they seemed to be dying down.

With the courtyard secure, the party stood amidst the chaos of the burning building, the fire’s light obscuring their infravision but revealing no immediate threats. The light from the fire, this early in the morning, would be seen from great distances. They needed to keep that in mind. They had defeated a significant number of bugbears and gathered valuable intelligence, but the Slavelords, including Markessa, remained at large, and the mission to dismantle their operation in the stockade continues.
