Summary
The session began with the group navigating through underground tunnels, making their way into the city of Highport. They were facing a Water Weird. Kipp recalled that the only way to kill the water weird is by casting a Purify Food and Drink spell, which Pyreece needed to rest to prepare. The group spent the night with the Troglodytes, feeling relatively safe. The next morning, they headed to the pool where Brandy lured the creature out, and Pyreece cast the spell, causing the creature to disintegrate into the water.
The Troglodytes celebrate the creature's demise and expressed their gratitude to Elenor and the group. They inform the group that the paths they know lead downward, not upward, but suggested a tunnel above the waterfall as a possible route. The Slayers then moved to a room with a giant lizard, waiting for Kipp to soothe the beast so they could proceed. They found the tunnel and encountered a collapsed staircase leading to a chamber, which Brandy navigated carefully due to its unstable structure.
Brandy discovered a barred opening on the other side of the room and managed to kick some bars free, revealing an old sewer system. She and the others lowered themselves onto a walkway and follow the tunnel, encountering acid drips that cause damage. They reach a ledge where the water drained and decided to cross to a chamber on the other side. Audra attempted to wade through the water but found it too deep. Kipp found the eastern end of the tunnel more passable so the group used a rope to safely cross.
In the chamber, they encountered sarcophagi and were attacked by undead creatures. Brandy and Elenor climb onto the sarcophagi to fight, while Pyreece successfully turned some of the undead. A wraith appeared and attacked Audra, but the group managed to defeat it without lasting damage. They then proceed to a staircase, finding a door that was barred from the other side. After several attempts to force it open, they heard someone unbarring it from the other side.
The door opened to reveal Ghost, who is surprised and thrilled to see the group. He confirms that the sea caves connect to the city and leads them to a small stone room cluttered with debris. Blackbird appears, expressing disbelief at their arrival. Ghost revealed a hidden room with a group of ragged people and informed them that a passage out of the city had been found.
The group discussed the challenges of getting the people out safely, including navigating through water and undead. They considered building a makeshift boat and rigging a pulley system to help the people cross the flooded room. They also discuss the potential difficulties with the Troglodytes and their giant lizard, suggesting bringing meat to distract the lizard while they passed through.
They decide to build a boat from the available wood and rig a pulley system. Blackbird remembered a possible boat. he and Ghost left to retrieve it. Bambi waited in the tunnel, listening for signs of betrayal, while the others distributed rations and water to the hungry people. Eventually, Blackbird and Ghost returned with the boat, and the group helped carry it down to the basement room.
The boat, though not in the best condition, was deemed sufficient for crossing the flooded room. They planned to use a cable to pull the boat through the room, avoiding the need to row. The group rested and prepared for the journey, with Blackbird providing information about the city and advising them to travel after dark to avoid drawing attention.
Blackbird also provides clothing to help the group blend in with the city's inhabitants, warning them against seeking to work openly. The group discussed their goals and the layout of the city, including the various districts and the presence of different races. They learn about the orc districts, the palace district, and the temple district, as well as the dangers of the city's sewer system.
The group worked out a deal with the Troglodytes and feeding the giant lizard to ensure safe passage. They also cleared out any remaining piercers and navigated past the chimney cavern and the hypnotizing plants. They returned to the basement and after a few days of preparation, they were fully rested and ready to go. The group disguised themselves and prepared to move through the tunnels.
Ghost led the group out of the basement and into the town, advising them to head east towards the coastline. He warned them to avoid people milling about in the dark and provided directions to the better-maintained eastern docks. The group began making their way through the different districts, encountering a group of drunk Hobgoblins who demand protection money.
A confrontation ensued, with Honey Badger tricking one of the Hobgoblins before attacking. The group fought off the Hobgoblins, using spells and physical attacks to defeat them. They decide not to pursue the fleeing Hobgoblins, instead pulling their hoods over their faces and continuing east towards the Bearded Clam.
That is where this session ended.

Detail
This session started with the group in the underground tunnels working their way upward and into Highport. Kipp remembered that the only way to kill the water weird was to cast a Purify Food and Drink spell on it. It kills it instantly. Pyreece didn't have the spell loaded so she had to rest to get it. They rested that night feeling relatively safe with the Troglodytes. The next morning, they went over to the pool. Brandy tempted the creature to attack her. Pyreece, not far behind her, cast the spell on the creature. It backed away a little, straightened, and just seemed to slowly fall apart, back into the water.
The Troglodytes were very happy at the demise of the creature and celebrated a little. They thanked Elenor and the group and told them that they didn't know a path up. They know the other paths they know about don't go up. Those paths instead go down to the place where they live. There is a tunnel above the waterfall, where the water comes from, and they think that might be a way up.
The Slayers moved to the room with the giant lizard and waited on Kipp to sooth the beast so they could walk up the stream and find the tunnel. They did find the tunnel and started moving down it. They came to a collapsed stair case that led to a chamber. Oglesby checked it and didn't find any traps. Brandy went first and climbed her way to a chamber. The chamber was not structurally sound.
Brandy saw a barred opening on the other side of the room. The roof looked as if it could collapse at any moment so she stayed to the outer wall and moved south and then east until she reached the bars. Everyone followed close behind. The bars were rusty but there was an old sewer system on the other side. The bars were still set fairly well but Brandy decided that she could probably kick some free. She laid on her back and put all of her strength into a single kick which worked. The bars popped out and the way was cleared.
Brandy then moved to the opening and looked around. There was a five foot drop to a platform that stretched the length of the tunnel, wide enough to walk on. The ceiling was about 5 feet above where she stood. The water was moving through quickly from east to west and around a turn.
Brandy lowered herself to the walkway followed by Audra and Pyreece. She made her way down to a turn. Almost immediately, she was hit with a burning sensation on the back of her neck. There was a spot over her where the rock was clear of mold and fungus. She finally decided that the drip was possibly acid.
She moved down the tunnel to the turn and looked beyond. The ledge they were on ended another 20 feet or so ahead and the tunnel appeared to end. Audra and Pyreece tried to move past the acid drips quickly but both were damaged. Brandy had moved down to the end of the ledge. There was a whirling motion in the water which indicated that the water was going down a drain of sorts. Across the water from her, there was a collapsed wall and beyond that was a chamber. They decided to cross to that chamber and see where it led.
Brandy backed up and told them. Audra slipped into the water to see if she could reach bottom and walk across. She couldn't touch the bottom without submerging. She pulled herself back up. Meanwhile Kipp moved to the east end of the tunnel. There was a lot of debris here, fallen rocks and such, a spot where he felt they could cross safely. Pyreece tied off to Kipp and started across. She made it to the other side without issue. The others followed. When it came to Brandy, she came over on Kipps shoulders.
The Slayers made their way down the tunnel with Audra in front. They reached the opening. The water was really trying to pull them to the drain but Audra made it into the room and the rest could use the rope to safely pull themselves into the room. Once in, they stayed to the wall and started around the outer rim of it. Audra and Pyreece had their light gems out. There were many sarcophagus' in this chamber and on the other side, there were stairs leading up.
While making their way around the room, they were set upon by very wet undead. They started fighting them. Brandy climbed off Kipps shoulders, onto the top of a sarcophagus. She fought one of the Ghast from there. Elenor climbed up onto another sarcophagus and attempted to turn the undead before she remembered that she wasn't a priest. Pyreece ditched the Ghast on her and moved further into the chamber and climbed onto a sarcophagus where she could also get a better look into the room but more importantly, the undead could see her better. She attempted to turn the undead. Two of them were affected and fled.
As she did that, a couple of more attacked. From the staircase that they were making their way to, a shadowy creature appeared. It was a wraith. It made it's way to Audra while she fought another Ghast. Oglesby move to attack the Ghast on Audra so she could focus on the Wraith. The Wraith hit Audra and she felt a sudden shock of cold ripple through her body. Pyreece and then Kipp finished off their Ghasts and moved to fight the Wraith. Brandy had killed several Ghast and was moving that way when the Wraith was destroyed. Though the cold touch of the Wraith pulsed through Audra when she was hit, she seemed to suffer no lasting damage.
The group moved to the stairs and began climbing them. There was a landing at the top and a passage way. Brandy was in front and worked her way to the other end. She found a door and attempted to open it. It wouldn't budge. She tried to force it but it wouldn't budge. Oglesby checked it and determined it was barred from the other side. Kipp moved up and he and Brandy both attempted to push through the door but to no avail.
Audra mentioned that they were surely close to their destination and maybe they should just knock. Before anyone could do that, a sound came from the other side of the door indicated that someone was unbarring it and opening it. Everyone prepared for a fight when they saw the face of Ghost. He seemed surprised and thrilled that they had made it there.
There was a shift at this point. The Slayers went by their aliases from here on out.
Ghost said, “Orc Slayers! You made it. So Blackbird was correct! The sea caves do connect into the city.“. He turned and ran back calling out, “It worked, it worked!”. He continued, “Are you hurt? Come you are safe here. At least for the time being.”. He led them into a small stone room cluttered with debris and refuse. It appeared to be a cellar or basement. Darik stated that they were hurt some.
Blackbird stepped out from behind some boxes. He came up, a look of surprise on his face. “I can't believe it!”, he said. As they came in, Ghost said, “Let me show you who you have come to rescue.”. He went to a stack of crates that cleverly opened like a door of sorts, revealing a room beyond with a huddled group of ragged looking men, women, and children. He told them, “Good news, a passage out of the city has been found.”.
The people in that room were very happy to hear that their time being trapped here may be coming to a close. Ghost and Blackbird were under the impression that it would be an easy way in and out, that it had been cleared. Honey Badger said, “I wouldn't use that as a normal way to go in and out, if it were me!. Darik agreed. Honey Badger added, “I don't want to pee on your parade but it's very dangerous going back the way we came. I don't see getting these people out safely, maybe one or two at a time, possibly.”. Blackbird asked if they'd killed everything along the way. Honey Badger told him that they didn't kill everything on the way in.
They explained the different struggles that they would have to contend with. One of the initial struggles would be getting through the water and undead. Blackbird was a little surprised by that comment. The Slayers told them that they had taken care of a bunch of undead but there might be a few stragglers. The trip through that room would be easier by boat. They discussed building a makeshift boat from the boards and things lying around here.
Getting through the water would be easy. The Troglodytes in there though, might be more difficult. They were nice enough to the Slayers but they didn't know how they would react to people just roaming through. They'd also have to get by their Giant Lizard. Once they reached that tunnel, if they brought some meat for him, they might be able to toss it across the room and while the Lizard ate it, quietly move through the room. The other way would be to take the other tunnel, that leads to a waterfall, and jump off into the pool below and swim to the shore and walk out from there.
That's when they told them about the stalactites that drop on your head, and the quicksand room. They told them that they thought they had taken care of all of the stalactite creatures but more may pop up. Maybe we take a few through but you and Ghost join us to see how it would go.
They went back to the idea of building a boat, looking at all of the scraps of wood in the rooms. They would also need to rig up a pully system so the people wouldn't have to swim against the current. Getting by the Troglodytes would be easier if we talked to them first and let them know they'll be coming through.
They discussed some of the Slayers accompanying them this first time but decided they would all have to go. They discussed building a raft from the pieces of wood around here when Blackbird remembered a real boat by a stream nearby. He and Ghost told everyone to wait while they left to get it.
Bambi, being the not so trusting type, waited in the tunnel until they came back. She was listening for the sounds of betrayal. Meanwhile, several of the slayers handed out some rations and water to the slaves. They were obviously very hungry. After a time, they heard noise from above, it sounded like somebody moving something heavy. Bambi heard discussion as two men tried to figure out how to carry this boat down the stairs and make the tight turns.
Bambi moved down there to helped. They got the small boat into the basement room. Honey Badger asked about the city above. Blackbird said, “This city was under attack years ago. Much of the town is devastated. You can find crap like this laying around. I remembered there are a lot of abandoned areas, districts, homes, and such around. There is a small waterway outside that is really not boat worthy but somebody had a boat for, I guess, when the water would be up. I don't know why they would have had it, but I remembered seeing an old boat up there.”.
The boat was not in the greatest condition but it seemed good enough. It would work well getting them over the flooded room and the passage way beyond. Blackbird said, “I wouldn't pile it with people but we could get a couple through at a time. We could manage a fairy sort of situation with a cable to pull them through the room, they wouldn't need to row at all. They could also potentially use a pole to push their way across.”. They helped clear the passage way to continue getting the boat to the flooded room.
They looked at the Slayers and asked, “Do you need rest?”. They felt like they needed some rest after all of that. They sat and pulled out some drinks.
Blackbird said, “You know, I've been caught up in us, I have not considered your goals. You should know that you are within the city walls of Highport, near the western wall and approximately 1/2 mile north of the shoreline and main western gate. The ‘officials’ here will not know you are here and that should work to your advantage. The area outside is heavily damaged from past battles. It is not very hospitable but that helps us to hide. To keep from drawing attention to yourselves, travelling after dark could be advantageous, though fraught with dangers of its own I guess.”.
He added, “Oh, the clothing! I am afraid it is not flattering, and maybe even smells a little. But should help you to blend in.”. He opened a few of the crates in the room. Inside were cloaks, coats, shirts, britches, headwear and footwear of several styles. It seemed a variety of options were available, all designed with today’s ruffian, street folk, and vagrants in mind. He told them that if they went out looking like they do now, all armored up, they will draw attention.
He added, “I counsel you, despite your courage, do not seek to work openly. If your intentions are revealed. Well I fear the consequences would be swift and dire.”. The Slayers thanked him. He asked, Where will you go?”. Bambi asked, “Where should we go?”. Honey Badger said, “We are looking for our people who were kidnapped and brought here. So we need to get the lay of the land or place and then see if we can figure out where they might be.”.
Blackbird told them, “Many of the city's districts are divided by race. However, travel through the district where another race lives is not taboo.
The orc districts are divided by tribal groups. Gnolls occupy the east; hobgoblins, goblins, the west;. Orogs, Ogres near the Lord's Palace. Humans are interspersed among all the districts. Primarily human districts typically have more shops, more surviving buildings. Shops are still pretty popular.
If you see tent fields, that houses the city's poor.
There are large areas of rubble or ruined buildings that are usually accompanied with a bunch of these tents. Sections of the town are still abandoned, and occupied by squatters or monsters.
The docks are busy and well guarded by the soldiers of Turrosh Mak.
The palace district , surrounded by its own defensive walls, is the, former residence of the recently assassinated Kevram Bilarro. Turrosh Mak is lord there now with the mysterious Lady Tanva”, he looked to Ghost as if to check that he was saying that right, “yes, the Lady Tanva. We really don't know much about her.”.
The temple district is a ruin but I am told there are hidden temples to evil deities (Maglubiyet, Yeenoghu, Nerull, Hextor, lncabulos) hiding there. Lord Mak does not approve of their existence. There is a temple to the Elemental Eye that was consecrated to foster religious unity, and other sects were warned that any ills that befell the city would be blamed on them and the retribution would be harsh.
Oh, and a common way that people might think to get around is the cities sewer system, but it has largely fallen into disrepair and is inhabited by monsters. I would surely not go there.
The docks, like most of Highport are in a poor state of repair. The eastern docks are where most ships anchor and likely where your friends arrived if transported by ship from Elredd. There are some taverns and drinking establishments there. A popular establishment there is called the Bearded Clam. It's kind of a den of ruffians but perhaps information could be found there.
Honey Badger, being a halfling, was curious about how she might be viewed by the population above. “They aren't terribly common but there are halflings here.”, Blackbird said. He suggested maybe pretending to be a child or maybe you can hang out at the bar drinking and telling stories. He talked about the diversity. Most of the humanoid races are represented. They aren't generally respectable. Be careful who you trust. Honey Badger responded, “I never trust anybody anyway. I've had some experience slumming around so, I shouldn't have any problems”.
Blackbird added, “Try not to draw attention to yourselves. Keep your head down. You can probably get around. I don't know how easily you can get the information you need.”. Thumper asked, “Is this Turrosh Mak one of the Slave Lords?”. Blackbird told him “No! He was a warlord. He actually was a general for Kevram Bilarro who was the lord of this town. Kevram Bilarro assassinated. Most people believe Turrosh Mak was behind it but nobody could prove it, and Turrosh kind of…he's a bit of an enigma. He rules with an iron fist but that's kind of what this town needs.”.
He added, “There was a lot of chaos, pandemonium; evil temples were running loose and he kind of rained that stuff in, but he's done that with a heavy hand so, he is no good guy. But he has brought some semblance of order back to town. His punishments are generally harsh and swift, so you don't want to get on the wrong side of him.”.
Barry asked, “So what does he get from all of this, money from the Slave Lords or something?”. Blackbird answered, “There is money to be had for sure, this is still a port city. There are fees for transports, taxes, the palace is not the greatest but it is quite an upgrade for him. Maybe there is some deal with the slave lords, I don't know. He might be trying to work his way up in that organization.”. Barry asked, “So he's at the palace?”. Blackbird answered, “Yes, that is typically where he is!”.
Barry asked, “So if we leave from here, what sector of the city are we in right now?”. Blackbird replied, “You are in the extreme western side of the city. It's a coastal town. You are about a half mile south off the coast line. When you walk out of this building, you'll see the western wall to your right. The main dock activity is on the eastern side. It's kind of on the opposite side of town. We, Ghost and I, operate in this district around the western gate. I don't have a lot of information about what goes on over there.”.
He added, “Each groups acts according to the code of secrecy, we don't talk to each other. We don't know what the other groups are doing. We don't even know who is in them. They know they exist, that they have infiltrated the city in all kinds of areas, there ability to extract information from someone they find out about is infamous. So we don't want to be caught like that. So I don't know much about that end of town. I do know that is where most of the ship traffic comes in.”.
Barry asked, “So what's in the district that you cover?”. Blackbird answered, “We're working the west gate area and the western side of town is mostly populated by Goblins, Hobgoblins, mixes of humans.”. Honey Badger said, “That's my kind of people!”. Blackbird added, “The palace is up the hill and kind of in the southwest corner of town. There is kind of a wall area and the palace is up there. Not anything super grand but very well guarded.”.
Oglesby said, “Well, I guess we need to see what kind of coverage or disguises we can put on. What we can pull off and what we can't.”. Honey Badger didn't feel like she would have too much trouble. She asked Blackbird if they moved around with their swords. Blackbird said, they keep them hidden, covered, but everybody is armed here. Someone who is not armed is asking for it.”. Honey Badger added, “The only thing difficult to hide would be bows, We should put those in the bag of holding.”. They all put their bows in the bag.
They discussed hiding armor. He suggested that Thumper would stand out like a sore thumb. She and Bambi covered there armor in dirt and mud in order to knock down the gleam and then covered most of it with ragged clothing. Honey Badger covered her armor as well. Everyone found something to cover the items they didn't wish to show. They messed up their hair and smudged a little dirt here and there on their skin. Barry was able to put on the hat of disguise. With that, he was able to keep his bow well hidden. Rigby had Honey Badger's, Bambi's, and Darik's Bows. Rigby put up her staff sling as well.
Blackbird was ready to go then, they'd worked out how to get everyone through the tunnels and the Slayers helped them get through it. They built the rope system to pull the boat through along with a pole to help guide it. They pulled up to the grate and climbed up to get into that room. They made their way down the stairs and through the tunnels and into the water. They worked out a deal with the Troglodytes. They fed the Lizard, that’s how they dealt with it. When ever someone enters the room, the Lizard expects food. They advise them to bring meat with them. Come down and throw a bunch of meat into the far corner and then walk through and out.
The gate was not locked so they can open it and get through. They worked out a sign they can use to get passed them. Then they continued on, clearing out any remaining piercers. They then followed the path down past the chimney cavern and down to the water. They waited for low tide and avoided the area with the plants and their little hypnotizing eyes. From there they walked out. It took a few days to work this out and then return to the room. They were fully rested and healed.
Rested and ready to go, Ghost led the group out of the basement and moved to the windows to look out on the town. It was dark but there was still activity. They left the building. The area they were in was wrecked, much of it burned. They could see the western wall. To the east, they could see the open shoreline in the distance.
Ghost couldn't travel with them any further but told them to make their way east towards the coastline. Probably 3 or 4 miles across town. In the dark there shouldn't be a lot of people milling about but the ones who are milling about, you want to try to avoid. East, south, and southeast are where the docks are. Go south, find the water. The western docks are in really poor shape. On the eastern side, you'll come to where the docks are in better shape and better maintained. Barry was looking forward to reaching the Bearded Clam. Ghost told them that their paths may never cross again. He thanked them for all their help as he left them to the town.
Most of the areas of the city didn't look much better than where they were. They moved east towards the harbor, traveling for about a mile through different districts. They were looking for the Bearded Clam. They crossed a small creek running through town over a short bridge. While trying to keep a low profile, they came upon a group of drunk Hobgoblins exiting a building. They'd spread out in front of them and told them it was not safe to be out after dark.
The Hobgoblins proceeded to ask for protection money. Darik told them, in Hobgoblin, that they didn't need their assistance. They suggested that the Slayers should pay 10 gold pieces for their services, protecting them. Darik told them that they weren't rich and could not afford to pay them. More seemed to show up behind the group. They asked for 10 gold, Darik offered 10 copper. They demanded 5 gold.
Honey Badger said “I found this shiny rock. What did you say it was…a diamond?”. She suggested that maybe that would work as payment. She appeared to pull something out of her pocket but kept her hand closed, seemingly around some object. She moved up a little like she was going to hand it over. One of the Hobgoblins grunted and moved up to take it. When he got close enough, Honey Badger said, “Here it is!”, as she pulled out her short sword and attacked. She got a good hit in. The Hobgoblins then attacked from all sides.
Rigby got off a Slow spell and slowed down all of the Hobgoblins in front of them. Thumper got off a Hold Person spell and froze two of the Hobgoblins behind them that were moving in on Barry. She had already moved up and attacked one of the Hobgoblins on Rigby. Barry was also acting to provide protection to Rigby. Darik cut one down quickly. Honey Badger cut one down. Then Bambi cut one down spewing blood everywhere. She shouted at her other opponent to run. Seeing the battle was not going their way, the Hobgoblins fled, those that could at least. The Slayers didn't try to stop them, they took no additional attacks on them. They'd figured the Hobgoblins had learned their lesson and the Slayers needed things to quiet down.
There were a lot of people out now, trying to see what was going on. The slayers just pulled their hoods over their faces and moved along, heading east looking for the bearded clam.
That is where this session ended.
