Summary
They started this session at a crossroads. They had just finished off a group of Gnolls. Three had escaped to return to the rest of their group. It was suggested that even though it was late, they should probably put some distance between themselves and this carnage. They set out south again. They travelled for another hour or two until it was very late and dark. They moved some distance off of the road to the west and stealth camped, no fires.
Brandy took the first watch. She heard the occasional yip in the distance but otherwise her watch was uneventful. Kipp took the second watch. He circled the camp a little ways out. He spotted some spiderwebs in the trees just a little north of the camp. He carefully moved in closer and checked to see if he saw any spiders. He didn't. What he finally noticed was that these were old webs. They appeared to be abandoned. He finished out his watch with no other activity and woke Audra. He pointed out the webs and turned in. She picked a point between the road and the camp and settled in. There was no activity on her watch either.
The next morning, they moved back to the road and headed south. Sometime during the day the reached a point in the road where they heard, what sounded like, cheering that rose in volume and then dropped back down. It was off to the west. They looked around on the ground and found booted footprints. Some came up the road and some came from the water to the east. There was a small path that moved west into the woods. They decided to check it out.
Everyone moved a short ways into the woods and then Oglesby snuck in closer. Kipp followed some distance behind him keeping and eye out for trouble. Oglesby found an area surrounded by a wooden sort of wall made from lashing sharpened trees together. There were buildings and as he got closer, he spied two Orc guards. He got even closer and saw even more Orcs. The cheering still occasionally erupted, usually after a sharp sounding pop. He began circling to the east of the fort, seeing fire light peaking through between buildings and parts of the wall. He couldn't see what was going on though.
Oglesby decided that he wanted to get a closer look but Orc's have infravision and moving to the wall would have definitely exposed him. The Orcs were paying more attention to what was going on inside the wall than what was outside of it. He decided to play it safe and use a charge on his invisibility ring and become invisible. He then moved up to the wall where he could see in a little better but still not everything. An Orc guard opened a gate north of him and walked out and into the woods. From what Oglesby could see, he appeared to be peeing. Og took a chance and moved through the gate and into the fort. He got just away from the gate when the Orc returned and reentered and re-barred the gate.
Og made his way closer to the noise, noting the size of the Orc presence here. As he got closer, he saw the Orcs taking two human prisoners and pushing them toward a cave in the back of the fort. Above that was a flat plateau like area that was a pretty large area. It also held a bunch of Orc guards watching inside and outside of the wall. He moved to the western side of the village and up onto that area and decided he needed to leave and report what he'd found.
There was a gap in the wall and he carefully climbed down. Once he was down, he saw a small hole. It was too small for the group to be able to use to get inside. It appeared to be an air hole into the area below. He moved away from the fort. Then he moved south and eventually found a creek running through the area. As he followed that south and east, back towards his group, he found a bridge that they must have built. He moved back into the woods and toward the main gate.
Og finally reached Kipp who had lost sight of him when he went invisible. He whispered that it was time to return to the group. They both slipped deeper into the woods and worked their way back to the others. Oglesby explained what he'd seen. None of them wanted to leave without doing something about this. They decided to try to circle to the back side where Og had climbed down and assault the fort from there. They made a plan. Part of that plan was to sneak back there but Audra and Pyreece couldn't really sneak anywhere. The removed their armor, putting it in the bag of holding, and put on their cloaks of protection.
They moved through the woods and found the creek and the bridge. They'd had a lot of cover up to this moment but they had to cross and small area where there was very little cover. They went across one at a time. Everyone did fine until Audra crawled across and she managed to bump the bridge. She had slipped and fallen flat and decided to remain still, watching back to the gate. There seemed to be no activity so she continued on. Pyreece made it across but Kipp, who was last, also slipped as his hand found a whole that went all the wany up to his shoulder. This made more noise and this time, Orc's seemed to be looking out that way. He stayed low and continued across and out of sight.
They looked back from their spot in the woods and saw that the Orcs were venturing out to check on things. As they moved off, the saw the Orcs examining the bridge area. Seeing nothing that concerned them, they returned to their gate and back into the fort. The group continued around to the northeast side of the fort, staying just out of sight in the woods. Audra and Pyreece put their armor back on. Oglesby, still being invisible, moved in and climbed the area back up onto the plateau. He held out a rope, lowering it so that the ones coming behind him would be able to climb more easily.
Brandy was next, moving quietly across the opened area. She was spotted and an Orc called out at her. She stopped and stood still. This seemed to confuse them. They looked around the area where she had come from. Kipp was hidden back there and no one knew if he'd been seen or not. The Orcs finally opened the gate to come out and investigate. As they approached them, Audra used Sairalinde' to teleport Pyreece and Elenor up onto the plateau. That's when all hell broke loose. Shouts went up and Orcs started moving toward the intruders.
Pyreece got off a spell to try and hold the three Orcs north of them. Only one of them held though. Elenor went invisible and move away while Brandy and Kipp finished off the two Orcs that had come out of the wall and then made their way up onto the plateau. Audra finished off one Orc up there and moved to prevent Orcs from getting closer, trying to jam up the top of the stairs they would have to come up and attack from. An Orog came out of the tent in the center of the plateau and headed toward the action. He took a swipe at Audra and missed. Orcs that were on the ground level began making there way to the steps and realizing that they couldn't climb them began looking to the other side for a second way up. Their archers fired arrows on the group.
Pyreece tried holding some of them again and managed to hold the Orog. A shaman came out of a tent on the ground level area and started making his way to the activity. He tried to hold Pyreece, Audra and Kipp but failed. By now, Kipp, Audra, and Brandy were reeking havoc, having killed a few of the Orcs. Oglesby backstabbed an Orc and then went invisible as he got hit a few times. He moved to the back of the fort as the two un-held Orcs back there had moved up to fire arrows and the group. He started targeting them. Elenor set off a fireball near the stairs on the eastern side of the camp. She killed three Orcs and severely injured one. She also destroyed the stairs and part of the wall, blocked access to the plateau from that side.
An Orc that had been outside of the wall on that side climbed up and onto the plateau. When he moved toward Elenor, he was attacked by an invisible entity. He wet down quickly, never reaching Elenor. A mysterious “Man in Black” became visible and began helping them kill the Orcs. Tired of getting shot at but the Orcs on the ground level, Pyreece moved down to the ground level and cast an Obscurement spell, effectively swamping the Orcs down there in deep fog. They could no longer use their bows. Pyreece and Kipp were down there and began killing them off.
The battle only took a few more rounds and then it was over. The fog lifted and the group found themselves with an ally, maybe. He introduced himself as Ghost. That was a code name given him within a group he worked with. He wouldn't tell him his real name, only that he'd been here looking for an opportunity to help those being held here. He couldn't believe his luck when the assault began. He told them that his alias name was Pax Fallow. He said he wouldn't use his real name. The slavers reach is far and his family would be in danger if they knew who he really was. He suggested that they also adopt this practice to protect their loved ones. He said his group was large and one point but implied there were only a few of them left.
He moved to the edge of the plateau, looking down at the cave entrance below and suggested it was time to free those within.
That is where this session ended.
