Summary

Company Clandestine continued exploring the first floor exterior of the Rook’s Eye. Eryn looked through a frosted window and could make out light and movement inside, though she heard nothing. Above, the tower disappeared into fog and mist. Cal-El stayed hidden near the wall while Eryn moved along the exterior, noting octopus-like stonework, more frosted windows, and a distant figure barely visible through the fog.

After reporting what she had seen, the group chose to move upward. Eryn climbed the set of stairs near where they had entered, to a higher walkway and found a circular watch point with no one in it. Cal-El followed. As Eryn looked around the corner, a specter suddenly swept toward her and attacked, but missed.

Cal-El moved up to help, while Eryn shifted to make room for the others. Cassandra, Angelique, Symon, X’or, and Captain Ambrose Hurst began moving up behind them as best they could. X’or reached the fight first, and a second specter appeared to Eryn’s left. They focused on the first specter until it dissipated.

More specters then appeared around the party, turning the fight into a dangerous battle across the narrow upper walkways. The specters attacked Eryn, Cal-El, and X’or above, while Symon and Captain Hurst were attacked below. Angelique moved behind X’or, hoping to turn the undead, but she could not see them clearly, and they could not see her.

The specters’ touch carried the cold, draining power of undeath. Angelique attempted to turn the ones below, but they resisted, so she used her bow and enchanted arrows against the specter attacking Captain Hurst. Symon, badly shaken after being struck, fell back along the stairs. Cassandra forced herself between him and the specter, then after dispatching it dropped from the walkway to attack the one facing Captain Hurst from behind.

Cal-El fought fiercely, landing repeated blows. X’or held the line at the top of the stairs and struck hard at anything within reach. Eryn stayed engaged as well, while Captain Hurst fought as well despite the chaos of the stairs and walls. One by one, the specters were damaged badly enough to dissipate.

The fight was costly. Symon and X’or had both suffered from the specters’ touch, but Cal-El had taken the worst of the draining effect, losing several points of constitution. Angelique brought out the Amulet of Restoration and offered it to him. Though suspicious, he accepted it after being assured it had not come from the witch, Xantha. He spoke the command word, the amulet glowed, and his lost vitality returned. Its magic was spent until the 5th of Cobal.

The company checked their wounds and used what healing they could. Angelique had no healing spells left, and they had not rested, but some potions remained. Once they had recovered as much as they could, Eryn resumed scouting along the upper level, keeping low near the wall. She saw light through more frosted windows but no movement, voices, or obvious door.

Symon remained unwell from the specter’s touch while the others kept watch. Eryn heard a voice below complaining about the cold and telling someone to hurry up, followed by a muffled answer from farther away. She could not see the speakers. Continuing on, she found a split east and west, and partway down the eastern wall she spotted what looked like large double doors. The voices seemed to come from below, not behind them.

Eryn returned to tell the others about the possible entrance. She checked the doors and nearby area, spotting two or three trapdoors in the floor north of them but no guards. The lock looked familiar, requiring the same unusual key used before. Cal-El listened, heard nothing, and inserted the key. The lock glowed as it turned. Eryn opened the door, revealing a finely crafted interior passage with ancient woodwork, patterned carpet, candles along the walls, and a hallway that extended inward before turning left and right.

This is where the session ended.

Detail

Company Clandestine continued their exploration of the upper exterior of the Rook’s Eye. Eryn had moved up to one of the frosted windows and attempted to look inside. The glass was difficult to see through, but she could make out light and some movement beyond it. She heard nothing. Looking upward, she could see only partway up the tower before the fog and mist swallowed the view.

Cal-El stayed close to the wall below, keeping himself as hidden as possible near the window. Eryn moved farther along the exterior, studying the structure. There was artwork in the stone that looked almost octopus-like. As she moved along west she found the pattern again between some other frosted windows. The walkway continued north. Farther along, through the fog, she could barely make out a figure in the distance. It was unclear whether the figure was standing guard or simply standing there. More windows showed dim light from within.

After reporting what she had seen, the group decided to move upward rather than continue searching the lower exterior. Eryn climbed the stairs and reached a higher walkway. There, she saw a circular watch point, but no one stood in it. Cal-El followed behind her. As Eryn stepped farther onto the upper level and looked around the corner, a specter suddenly swept toward her and attacked. It missed her.

Cal-El heard the trouble and moved up to help. Eryn shifted position to make room for the others, but the tight stairs and parapets made it difficult for everyone to reach the fight. Cassandra, Angelique, Symon, X’or, and Captain Ambrose Hurst all began moving up behind them as best they could. X'or reached the battle first and joined. A second specter appeared and attacked Eryn from her left. They all focused on the first specter.

Just as the first specter dissipated, more specters appeared around the party. What had first seemed like a single threat quickly became a dangerous battle on the narrow upper walkways. The specters attacked Eryn, Cal-El, and X’or, with Symon and Captain Hurst being attacked below. Angelique had moved behind X'or hoping to turn the undead but was unable to see them, or worse yet, they were unable to see her. Cassandra had moved up behind her before the extra specter's had moved in.

The touch from a specter carried more than simple injury. Several of the company felt the cold, draining power of undeath as the specters struck at their bodies and vitality. Angelique attempted to turn the undead below, but the specters resisted her power. With that failing, she turned to her bow and used her enchanted arrows, striking the undead attacking Captain Hurst.

Symon was badly shaken after being struck by one of the specters, fell back along the stairs as he recoiled from it's touch. Cassandra forced her way between Symon and the specter as she joined the fight. When that specter fell, she dropped from the walkway to attack specter facing Captain Hurst from behind. X’or held the line at the top of the stairs and struck hard at any creature within reach.

Cal-El fought fiercely, landing repeated blows against the specters. X’or also struck several times, and Eryn stayed engaged whenever she had room to attack. Captain Hurst fought as well, though the chaos of the stairs and walls made the battle difficult for everyone. One by one, the specters were damaged badly enough that they dissipated.

The fight was costly. Symon had been drained and looked badly shaken. X’or had also suffered from the specters’ touch. Cal-El had taken the worst of the draining effect, losing several points of constitution. After the last specter was destroyed, Angelique brought out the Amulet of Restoration.

Angelique offered the amulet to Cal-El. He was suspicious of the magic, but accepted it after being assured it had not come from the witch, Zantha. He put it on and spoke the command word. The amulet glowed, its power passed into him, and his lost vitality returned. The amulet’s magic was spent for the week and would not be available again until the 5th of Cobal.

The company checked their wounds and used what healing they could. They had not rested, and Angelique had no healing spells left, but some potions remained. Once they had recovered as much as they could, they continued.

Eryn resumed scouting along the upper level, moving low and staying near the wall. Several windows looked inward, but they were still frosted. She could see light inside, likely from a fireplace or other steady source, but she saw no movement and heard no voices. The walkway continued around the structure, with more windows but no obvious door.

Symon remained unwell, still feeling the effects of the specter’s touch. The others kept watch behind Eryn as she moved. At one point, she heard a voice from below, complaining about the cold and telling someone to hurry up. Another voice answered from farther away, muffled by distance and the stonework. From where she was, Eryn could not see the speakers.

She continued around to a split, east and west. Part way down the wall to the east she spotted what looked like a large set of double doors ahead. The voices seemed to be coming from somewhere below, not from behind those doors. She returned to tell the others that she had found a possible entrance. The group gathered and prepared to move forward.

Eryn crept back toward the doors and checked the area. Nearby, she could see what looked like two or three trapdoors in the floor, but no guards or other figures. She listened at the doors and heard nothing. Checking carefully for traps, she found none. The lock, however, looked familiar. It appeared to require the same kind of unusual key they had used before.

Cal-El had the key and listened at the door as well and heard nothing. The key was inserted carefully. As it turned, the lock glowed, just as the previous one had. Eryn reached forward, opened the door, pushing it aside.

Beyond the door was a finely crafted interior passage. The woodwork was ancient and beautiful. The carpet was in surprisingly good condition, patterned in an old style. Candles burned along the walls, lighting the hallway. The passage extended inward and then turned both left and right.

This is where the session ended.
