Curse of Strahd - Session 8 - 01/16/2021

We gathered upstairs in the Orphanage and decided that we must enter the attic to speak with Felix. Kyana seemed perfectly suited to the task. She might, at least, appear the least threatening. So she climbed up with Haldar following close behind. After Kyana started talking to him, the rest of the group made there way up. The boy seemed a little concerned with everyone coming up there and though it appeared that Kyana was calming him down and making a little headway while talking to him, she wasn’t and after a few moment, the boy suddenly turns into a ghostly gaseous form and move through the table as he attacks Kyana. The creature dishes out quite a bit of damage and then appears to enter Kyana and turns to attack the rest of us.

Kyana casts a sacred flame at Zanfyr but he aptly dodges the shot. Haldar casts Zephyr Strike on himself to assist in dodging blows and then moves quickly past Kyana and strike her with the hilt of his sword in the attempt to knock her unconscious. He succeeds and she goes down. Rinn is stuck with no enemy to attack. He holds a Burning Hands spell and waits for the target to present itself. Dain moves up quickly to Kyana’s body but realizes if he heals her, he is aiding the enemy so he holds his attempt to heal.

Zanfyr prepares to cast Ice Knife should the enemy present itself. Misty moves near to Kyana in preparation to defend her from this enemy should it present itself. Suddenly, the smoky form exits Kyana and move towards Dain. As he shows up, Rinn fires his Burning Hands spell It does little damage but does manage to set fire to the area around him. Dain lays on hand on Kyana. Zanfyr fires off his Ice Knife spell and catches the creature and Dain in the hit.

The creature hits Dain twice and slams him with a great amount of force. He then jumps into Dain. The fire is starting to grow a little. Misty shoves Kyana away from the fire and then strikes Dain. Dain falls unconscious. Snoggly holds his action to hit the creature with a Magic Missile when it shows. Kyana mind clears and she moves to a safe location and holds a Guiding Light spell. Haldar hold his action to fire a bow at the creature when it shows up. The creatuire emerges and Snoggly lets go of his Magic Missile for a good bit of damage. Haldar fires two shots, and hits with both, but the second hit is a critical hit. Kyana’s Guiding Bolt flies and hits and seems to really hurt the creature as it lets out a painful scream at the hit.

The creature moves to Zanfyr and strikes him hard and attempts to move in and set up house. He succeeds. Rinn casts Protection From Evil and Good. This will give Zanfyr advantage in any attempt to break the creatures will and force him out. The fire reaches Dain and he begins to burns. Zanfyr seems begin to return to normal as the smokey eyes seem to clear. He gains control of himself again. Snoggly forgot his “oops I crapped my pants!” so he was force to seek a chamber pot at this time. Boots decided to take over Kevin’s characters and his chair. Zanfyr casts a cure light wounds on himself. Misty moves within range to strike waits for it to appear. Snog casts mirror image on himself and =now there are 3 additional Snoggly’s. Haldar moves to Dain and drags him body away from the fire. Kyana prepares to strike the creature when it appears.

He lunges out of Zanfyr towards Misty and is hit by Kyana’s arrow and a bonus damage. He manages to hit Misty and can’t seem to move into her. She does her best cat hiss at it. Rinn fires a magic missile at it and it screams and dissipates.

Rinn begins using spells to put out the fire. A little bit here and there but he is making progress. Misty uses a potion to bring back Dain. Kyana searches for the bones. Rinn begins searching as well. Snoggly suggest that the entity might have been trapped within the locket and was let go when it was open. He thinks it might have returned there. Misty gives her cloak to Zanfyr which aids in protecting him. The group moves to Ms. Belasco’s office to search for the locket. She’s not there but we find the locket in the center drawer. We wrap the locket in paper and then slip it into a pouch that Misty is wearing. Rinn stresses the importance of not paying with the locket and especially don‘t open it. It is very dangerous!

The group then moves to Milivoj’s room. A few of us entered the room looking for any place in the room where the bones might be hidden. Milivoj is no longer in the room. After a bit of looking around the facility, we suddenly notice that no one appears to be in the building. Kyana moves to one of the front windows and see everyone out front and they are pointing at the roof. Milivoj is there, standing as well. We head out front to see what everyone is looking at. We notice some smoke coming from the roof. As Ms. Belasco points out that Milivoj is awake, she also points out that the house may be on fire. Rinn climbs the building to the roof in case there is still an active fire going. It’s not active anymore and it is out. Rinn comes back down.

The kids are taken away from the conversation where we explain that Felix was already dead and the creature was disguised as Felix. We had Father Lucian start talking to Milivoj and to assuage his concerns, Rinn and Misty retuned to the house and to the attic to check it further to make sure the fire is out and maybe do something to help air it out some more.

Father Lucian explains what has happened to Milivoj and explains that there appears to be some sort of demon thing attached to the locket. Lucian then explains that the bones are missing. He tells Milivoj that Yeska knew where the bones were and the locket with it’s evil presence, he believes that Milivoj can’t be completely blind to what’s going on. Milivoj seems distressed and doesn’t want to speak about that, but does relay that one of the children is missing, Ms. Belasco knows! Laslo is the missing child. As Milivoj speaks, he pauses with a concerned look towards the group, Lucian tells him we are adventurers. We are the ones that saved his life. We were the ones that took out the demon.

Milivoj appears weirded out, he’s been sick and is still really weak. Snoggly tells him that, for his part in it, he believes Milivoj meant well and he should just come clean. He think’s his ententions were probably honorable. Milivoj closes the circle and begins to speak, about 5 days ago Laslo, he says, “you know he’s very fond of little Arabell?”. The father said, “No!”. He continues on that they are very chummy and that Ms. Belasco can be a bit stern, to which the Father replied “Yes!”. Laslo had told Milivoj that he was going to run away. He didn’t mention that Arabell that was going with him. Laslo did, in-fact” run away and it appears that Arabell might have gone with him. Milivoj needed to hire someone to go find him and trackers cost money. At about the same time, down at the general store, a hooded man approached him about paying me to locate the bones of Saint Andral. 50 gold and some locket.I didn’;t want to dull ugly locket but he said I had to take it as well. He gave me a bag and told me I was to bring him the bones and gave me a location. I asked Yeska about the bones and kind of duped him into telling me where they were.

I met the figure in the town square and he seemed very anxious to find out what I knew. He approached me relatively aggressively and asks what I found, had I found them? I told him I had. He told me to steal the bones and to bring them to outside the Voctor house, “Bluto’s!”. The Father tells us that Bluto is sort of the town drunk. Not a very sharp individual. Milivoj then stole the bones, put them in the bag, placed that in the cart and off hooded figure road. Haldar asked if the figure was Bluto and he said no. He would have known if it were Bluto. The Father asked if he knew who the hooded man was to which Milivoj told him no, he never got a look at his face. He was riding in a horse drawn cart. He handed him the bag and the man placed the bag in the cart and rode away.

The next morning, Milivoj went to the inn, he felt like crap. Suldar and Vegney, a couple of hunters were there, Father Lucian had never heard of them. He gave them the money to find Laslo and Arabell. I returned home to bed and the next thing I remember is waking up to people dragging him out of the house because it was on fire. When asked again by Haldar what he could tell us about the man, he could only say that he was a slender fellow and that he never really saw his face. He could even see facial hair. He seemed to be disguising his voice but couldn’t tell for sure, talking like, well, if we had comic books, maybe something like a, oh, bat guy or man, if you will, low and raspy with no ancient. He didn’t recognize the voice.

Rinn and Misty do a thorough job of putting out the last remnants of the fire, making sure the building and its occupants are safe now. Rinn opens some shutters and windows to air the place out.

Snoggly asks Milivoj about the locket and what he did with it. He says he gave it to Felix. He had been upset and I was trying to give him something to cheer him up a little, maybe establish a repour with him. Snoggly asked what direction the hooded man travelled. It was a two wheeled cart, no lighting, an open buckboard sort of thing. Father Lucian tells us that the bones would be worthless elsewhere. He tells us the bones are tied to the church as such they are part of the church. The two parts are what protects everything. Remove them and they can protect nothing.

The Father explains the situation to Milivoj of Sedric and Felix. We can tell Milivoj is clearly distressed about the events and blurts out, “I was only trying to help!”. Rinn and Misty come out of the house about now and report that there is definitely no fire now! Everything is out, for sure, and the windows were left open to help ventilate it. Someone should close them later. They need to get someone in to do some repairs.

Milivoj said he needed to get to the inn to see if Suldar and Vegney were back and learn of what they had found. We offered to walk with him to the inn. When questioned about the man in the cart again, he went south towards the main intersection, but he was unable to see which way they went from there.

We escorted Milivoj to the inn. As they enter the inn, Dain remains outside but nearby. Milivoj spots the men after surveying the room. Rinn separates from the group and makes his way to the bar, keeping if head low. Debbie begins searching for a way to take a screen shot on her iPad and Seri was no help. There are lots of ravens outside the building. Rinn messages Dain to guard the door. Dain moves closer to the door, outside, in case he is needed. Rinn orders some wine. Milivoj and the rest of the group make their way to the table. They seem uncomfortable about the additional; people and ask about them. Milivoj tells them we are friends and don’t worry about us and asks what they found.

They tell him he may not like the answer, but we tracked them and followed them, there were two, probably a boy and a girl. We lost the trail near an area we stay away from because it’s a territory of the werewolves. If they went in there, they are likely gone. When asked where that is, Snoggly asks where that area is. When we showed them our maps, they show is North West of here but before you get to the village of Krezk. They tell you they tracked them into the woods between Lake Varitoch and Lake Zarovich. The tower on the map is on a little island in the middle of Lake Varitoch and the whole area is infested with werewolves. Kyana asks about something that would help fend off the werewolves. They tell us silver and magic will help us.

Now we are going to have to decide if we are going to go after the kids or stay here and find the bones. Snoggly believes he knows who might have acquired the bones but has not told us who he suspects yet. Milivoj moves to the bar to get a drink. He looks at Rinn and asks why I am not grey. Rinn replies with a list of type of elves, not all are grey. He seems concerned with his future, will they put him in the stocks or have him executed. Rinn says it depends on what Lucian tells them. He is well respected and can guide how the information is released. Any information you can give us to help us find them will surely go in your favor. Rinn asks if he has met the Baron to which he replies, “Yes, I have met the Baron”, at which time he turns to Danika and says, ”All will be well!” to which Danika replies, “Yes, All will be well!”. Then he whispers to me, “It’s all bullshit! All, is not well!”. Could the hooded person had been the Baron? He said that he guessed it could have been the Baron. The voice didn’t match but he could have disguised his voice. It definitely isn’t a woman.

Milivoj seems perturbed about a festival sign he see one the wall. Rinn points out to Milivoj that he is not to blame for the bones being stolen, the mistake was Father Lucian in telling Yeska where the bones were. He should have never told anyone where they were. He gulps down his wine and and seems like that won’t really help to which Snoggly offers him some whisky. Milivoj asks about it and not heeding the warnings, gulps down a shot of that. It really hits hard. After a moment he begins to shoot off his mouth about the bullshit going on around here. Rinn covers his mouth and tries to escort him from the inn. The two hunters decide to get in the middle of this, not knowing who we are and being concerned about Milivoj’s safety. Misty eventually uses a monk skill to silence Milivoj though that stresses the situation even further, it does quiet Milivoj and those of us around him. They reach for their weapons, then Danika moves in to calm the situation. She eventually walks into the silence area and then backs back out. She commands that Suldar and Vegney retreat to their table and the situation eventually calms down.

Once Sulkdar and Vegney calm down and go back to their seats, Danika asks Snoggly if he would turn off this thing he did to silence everything. Without missing a beat Snoggly says sure and with a glance Misty’s way, it is done, Danika then chastises Milivoj for his loud behavior and suggests he should stop saying the things he is saying. Milivoj calms down and explains to Suldar and Vegney that they shouldn’t worry about the rest of us, he said, “They are only looking out for me” to which Suldar replied, we are all looking out for you.

It was about this time that Urwin came out from the back room and talks to Danika, He was inquiring about what had just taken place. Danika said everything is fine, and seeing that everyone was calm, he let it all slide.

Meanwhile, Dain, who is waiting outside, keeping his head down, he sees a group of guards heading down the street towards the inn and he notices that one of the guards is better dressed than the others. He appears to have more decorations as if he is in charge. He is also heavily cloaked and he is very large, very big. The group seems to be looking around generally scanning the people out here as they walk past but don’t seem to be searching for anyone. Dain listens carefully to their conversation as they pass by but doesn’t hear anything useful. The guards around him seem to be carefully listening to doing as told indicating that the big man must be in charge.

We escort Milivoj back to the Orphanage where the kids rush up to greet him. The kids get him to run off with them cause they wanted to show him something. We bid goodnight head off to find the good father. We learn quickly that he has returned to St Andral so we turn about and head there. We find him sitting much as the last time we arrived. There are people in the beds and he is talking to one of them and as he see’s us, perks up and cuts off the conversation he is having to have us follow him to his office. He asks what we found out. We relayed all of the information ew had gathers and wanted to know what he wanted from us next. Should we try to go after the bones or should we go after the missing children? Snoggly asks again if there is someone in the town that might have a reason to take the bones. After a little more discussion, it is decided that since the bones are useless outside of the church that the reason they were stolen was to make the church vulnerable again. Anyone repelled by the bones might want them gone up to and including the “Devil”. With the bones gone, church and therefore, the town, are once again, vulnerable.

Snoggly suggests that the bones may still be in town as the person who drove off with them went deeper into the town and not out of the North gate which is the closest gate. Boots paw is stuck and has become a source of humor for the rest of the party.

We head to the inn and turn in for the evening.
