Session Details

We begin this session in Argynvosthold. We are on the second floor, near the back of the mansion. We had opened the door to a large room with an altar, some stained glass windows, one shatter with shards of it on the floor, and a mist pouring in through the window. The room is made up of two levels. All of that is on the first level while Rinn entered on the balcony on the upper level of that room. He moved to the right side and further into the room to get a better look and found three figures kneeling at the alter. There are also two spiral stair cases in alcoves opposite one another.

Rinn calls out, “Commander Hornguard, are you here?”. He gets no response so he moves a little further across the balcony and says , “Hello!”. That gets a response but I don’t think it’s the one he wanted. The figures, which look a little like the undead man we left near the tower, turned their heads toward him, and then got up and proceeded to leave the back of the room. Rinn called out that they were going towards the main room, Haldar and Dain backed up to the top of the stairs, on opposite sides, and waited on them to appear.

As Haldar gets within site4, he sees the creatures moving up the stairs. He speaks up and says, “Hold, who do you serve?”. Haldar moves to a more advantageous position and fires two shots at the one coming up his side. He hits him for a good amount of damage. Piddlewick comes silently around the corner and attacks the one coming up Dain’s side. Two critical hits later and he did a lot of damage to him. The revenant that Haldar, hit continued up the stairs, and headed towards the room where Rinn was. Zanfyr attempts to hurt it as it passed by. He missed.

Snoggly moves against the wall cast Protection from Good and Evil on himself, and then for his bonus action, he takes a big swig of whiskey. Zanfyr follows suit with the same spell on himself waits to see what the creature does. From Haldar’s vantage point, he sees the revenant that Piddlewick attacked just destroy him in a single hit, sending pieces flying everywhere. That same Revenant moved passed Dain who took a shot at him and missed. As he passed Misty and Kyana, they both took a shot at him. They both connected.

Rinn cast Protection From Good and Evil on himself. Then he disengaged and dropped to the floor below. He took off through the door that they went out earlier. He passed two life sized statues in armor. This took him to the main room but he stopped just inside the door and hid. Misty moves in and tries hit the revenant in the room that Rinn just escaped from. She whacks him pretty hard to, but he’s still standing. Kyana tries to turn undead. It doesn’t seem to have any effect on him. She puts a flaming sphere on his back.

Dain casts Protection From Good and Evil as well. He then moves past the revenant that just passed him and places himself between the revenant and Kyana. Dain takes a hit by the Revenant as he passes. This battle continues on for a while. Zanfyr eventually morphs into a Dire Wolf. Rinn is finally able to join the fight striking from behind with a sneak attack. Zanfyr take a bad set of attacks from one of them but remains standing as a dire wolf. Snoggly unleashes a series of magic missiles while Haldar continues sinking arrows deep into them. They can take a lot of damage.

Misty does get taken down at one point but is able to be revived. The creature then turns his attention toward Kyana who brandishes the same holy symbol as they. Kyana hits the one on her and her spiritual weapon lands a hit as well. Zanfyr takes a hit that knocks him out of his giant spider form. Snoggly lets fly with more magic missiles but not from the wand this time. Zanfyr disengages and takes a bow shot at the one on him. Kyaan takes a hit. Rinn disengages from his target, and moves to strike the one on Kyana, hoping to at least draw his attention but also to focus their strikes on one so they can remove one from the battlefield.

Kyana Lets go of the spiritual weapon and cast Flaming Sphere placing it at the back of her direct enemy and hits him with it. She then backs away from him into the doorway of the room behind her. Dain moves up and puts the final hit on this creature. One is down. The other creature moved to strike Dain and missed. Haldar puts a solid hit into one and takes it down.

Snoggly turns around after downing a little whiskey and throws another magic missile at the only one standing. Zanfyr moves up and takes a bow shot. Kyana yells out, “Rinn, Dain, Drop!”. Thanks to the discipline they both garnered when being trained in the respective militaries, they do as Kyana asked. As they do, the flaming sphere in the room behind them moves over them and settles above the Revenant they are battling. Dain rises up and strikes it. An inchworm began it’s assault on the dragon statue out front of the tower.

The Revenant moves away from Dain and Rinn which each take an attack of opportunity. It makes it back to the stairs where Haldar strikes it with a bow shot. Snoggly attempts to stabilize Misty but fails. Zanfyr succeeds and Misty is saved. Rinn moves to a position to smack the retreating Revenant. Kyana moves to a position to see the Revenant. She rams it with the Flaming sphere. Dain moves around Rinn and jumps to the floor below awaiting the Revenant. Haldar puts a hit on the final Revenant and it goes down.

Kyana asks those that had taken some damage to gather for a healing. It’s a ritual spell so we wait nearby, searching the Revenant, while we wait for the healing. Rinn investigates the revenant before him and doesn’t find anything useful but then realizes it’s regenerating. It was about that time that the other two came out and into the main room. One reaches and attacks Kyana twice and takes her down. Boots decided to search for and love on the bleach ridden toilet brush. He had managed to pull open the drawer it was in.

Snoggly fired off his magic missile, as a first level spell. Zanfyr takes a shot at ne and misses. One of the Revenant attacks Dain and smacks him for 21 points of damage. Rinn attacks the one that is down, removing it head and throwing it across the room. He then steps up to another one and growls in his face. Dain moves from the one in front of him to the other one that has been hit already and puts it down. Haldar fires at the last standing one and hits. The one that Dain just put down begins standing up again. There is a call to burn them. Snoggly puts that one back down again with another magic missile. Zanfyr decapitates the one Snoggly just put down. Snoggly takes a hit from the remaining one. Rinn moves behind the remaining one and lands a death strike. In one fluid motion, Haldar decapitates it as it falls before him. Then come the firebolts. We pulled together the bodies and firebolt them many times until they were crispy and no longer regenerating. The healing began after that. Haldar tells us he recognizes these creatures as Revenants. They are very tough and they are trackers for something they have an oath of vengeance against. That is what they usually are. The oddity here was that these were just sitting there though, then suddenly triggered and came after Rinn.

Kyana was finally able to cast a ritual healing on everyone. Trying to figure out what is left to search in this fortress, while trying to figure out where we can to take a short rest, we determine that this part of the mansion is four stories. Rinn and Misty take positions and guard the others while they rest. Kyana heard something moving behind her as we completed the short rest. As she turned, she saw Piddlewick sneaking up behind her with a dagger. We were all surprised top see him and everyone looked around and noticed that the parts that were once scattered around the room, were all missing. Apparently, he reassembled.

While everyone was marveling over this, he began sneaking up behind Rinn. Rinn knoew he was coming and opted not to turn and face him, allowing hm his chance to practice his sneaking., Rinn did listen for him though and was surprised that he was able to sneak up on him. Piddlewick to the chance to stab Rinn in the back of his leg. Rinn was not happy about that. Rinn points out to Piddlewick that he hurt him, Piddlewick looks at the blade and seems to understand what he did and wipes the blade off on Rinn’s clothes. Rinn uses Prestidigitation to clean up the blood. Meanwhile, Piddlewick starts sneaking up on Haldar. Rinn tries to tell him that if he wants to practice that, use the handle so he won’t stab anyone. Haldar hears his approach and turns to face him.

Haldar checks to see if he senses undead. He is able to sense their presence within 5 miles of him. He concentrates for one minute and determines that there are 7 revenants above him. There are other lesser undead within 5 miles of us but the 7 Revenants are the most powerful things he senses. Haldar tells us what he sensed and though Piddlewick doesn’t read as undead, he said that it was evil, as it was sneaking up to attack him.

Dain decides to detect if Piddlewick is evil so he casts Divine Sense which lets him know if evil is within 60 feet. He determines that there is evil in Piddlewick. Thinking back to the fact that Piddlewick dis and came back, maybe Ravenloft returned him and he is changed. While everyone is going about their business, Dain maneuvers behind Piddlewick and uses his war hammer to smash him. They searched to parts for something that might be the life core of the doll but found nothing that would seem to act as that. They gathered up parts and disbursed them, some were thrown out into the yard, others were scattered around the first floor of the building. Snoggly took back his silver dagger. Rinn gathered his dagger back as well. At least if he comes back, he’ll initially be unarmed.

There was much discussion about the Revenants and why they are here. Remembering their singlemindedness, we determine that they are most likely here for vengeance against Strahd. In thinking about the madam Eva’s reading;

“The one of blades! The Avenger! This card tells of a powerful force for good and protection. A holy symbol of great hope! This treasure lies in a dragon's house. In hands once clean but now corrupted.”

This led to a discussion about who was corrupt. Dain mentions Hornguard, the leader of the Order of the Silver Dragon. But Haldar brought up the other answer that we had not considered. The Dragon, Argynvost. As a silver Dragon, he was a force of good, but as everyone has noticed, things that die don’t always stay dead, and hen they do return, they aren’t necessarily good anymore either. Dain says, but we’ve seen no sign of a dragon except the statue, to which Haldar replies, “Haven’t we though? The shadow that moved over this room, when we first got here, as if a dragon had flown over head.”. That got everyone thinking about it. Snoggly mentioned that he had heard once, in a bar, while getting drunk, that dragons can be shadows.

We determined that we are able to continue on without a long rest. While waiting for experience points, Misty started sensing something. She didn’t have time to articulate what it was but her tail was swishing back and forth as if agitated.
